Salary Range: Level I: $22.49 - $30.03 Hourly Level II: $24.65 - $33.04 Hourly This position is part of a flexible classification. Qualified candidates may be hired at either level based on their experience, education and training as determined by the hiring authority. Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; including occasional on call for afterhours response on nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled. Job Number: RC#901818 DESCRIPTION: This position is responsible for the servicing, maintenance and repair of Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department fire engines, ladders, ambulances, and other emergency response vehicles. Duties include, but are not limited to the following: diagnosing, inspecting, preventative maintenance and repair of emergency response apparatus utilized by the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department in the protection of life and property. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Work Experience: Level I: Requires two (2) years of automotive mechanic experience, preferably in heavy or diesel fire equipment. Level II: Requires two (2) years of heavy-duty mechanic experience, preferably with Fire vehicles. Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience. Education: Both levels: Requires high school diploma, GED or equivalency supplemented by special training in automotive mechanic and diesel equipment, or degree related to the core functions of this position. The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours). Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations: Level I: • Possession of a valid driver’s license. • Possession of, or required to obtain within ninety (90) days of hire, a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). • Possession of, or required to obtain within two (2) years of hire, an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I Fire Apparatus Technician certification. • Possession of, or required to obtain within two (2) years of hire, an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I Fire Ambulance Technician certification. Level II: • Possession of a valid driver’s license. • Possession of the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level I certifications for Fire Apparatus Technician and Fire Ambulance Technician. • Possession of, or required to obtain, within ninety (90) days of hire, a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL). • Possession of, or required to obtain within two (2) years of hire, an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level II Fire Apparatus Technician certification. • Possession of, or required to obtain with in two (2) years of hire, an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Level II certification for Fire Ambulance Technician. Both levels: Possession of a complete set of mechanic hand tools at time of hire.
